Multiple Layers

Illustrated by Jacqueline Davis Moranti

Recently, temperatures have dropped to major unbearable degrees in the northeastern states, via the polar vortex's path. It's so cold, you may not even want to leave home, but then you realize that's not a good enough excuse to call out of work! The next best thing is to dress practically and functional, but should you sacrifice your style for it? Lately I hear a lot of my friends saying, "It's too cold to try and look cute," I honestly disagree with that statement. One should never have to forfeit their style to face old man Winter. Sure you may have to shelve out certain pieces from your closet in favor of the boring fleece and clunky winter weather boots but all you need to do is think strategically. The winter season just means to think more creatively when getting dressed because in the depths of winter, great style is very possible!

To become a layering pro, one needs to not be afraid to pile on the layers. Layering is the most practical way to dress when it's really cold outside, which in a polar vortex means cutting out some of your beloved favorites such as ripped jeans and open knit sweaters! 2 degrees is nothing to joke with, and the most creative way to keep yourself warm is by wearing baselayers under your stylish outfits.

Turtleneck and Sweatshirt Combo
This pairing sounds like an odd couple but when done right looks effortless. I paired the combination with corduroy pants, ankle booties, pom pom beanie, and a faux fur vest for a stylish frock into a wintery day.

Jacket and Coat Combo
Layering jackets and coats together can help you find some of your favorite looks, especially since the autumn season always feel so short and this technique can help you gain more use out of your favorite fall jacket. Rather than donning the obvious sweater over sweater, the jacket will help insulate warmth a lot better, I also paired the combination with cropped bootcut jeans to better highlight your footwear choices. Ofcourse, tall socks required!

Cardigan, Button Up Shirt and Jacket Combo
This pairing seems like it might not be for the faint of heart because of how layered it is, but believe me, it sure keeps you toasty! The fail proof combination of sweaters and button front shirts are a work appropriate ensemble. As a fashion enthusiast, being just "work appropriate" is not enough! In this look, I added a wide legged silk pair of trousers and a shearling jacket to up the ante.

The key this season, and ever more so during this "polar vortex" is to not be afraid of layering and also don't be afraid to whip out the long johns. Next time you walk past your closet, take a long look and see what you can pair with each other, you'll most likely find the answer to your cold winter shuffle walk to work! Dear readers, how do you layer appropriately to survive old man Winter?
