90 Seconds or Less

Illustrated by Jacqueline Davis Moranti
You know what they say, a first impression is a lasting impression. It takes no time at all for someone to form their own opinions on you based on how you hold yourself, sometimes great and sometimes it can be terrible. With every new encounter, you are sized up and it can be nearly impossible to do over or reverse, they set the tone for every relationship that follows. I believe it's very important to build great relationships not only in our social lives but in our careers as well, it might be just what you need to help you with your opportunities. I've rounded up eight tips that have helped me throughout my wanderings make great impressions in 90 seconds or less! Check them out and put them to good use while you're at a NYFW show or fashion afterparty. Who knows, you might just achieve that contact you were aching for!

1) Smile more. Let the smile spread over your face like you're happy to take in who's in front of you. Enthusiasm is the name of the game, it shows interest.

2)  Let them parade themselves. People love to talk about who they are and what they do, let them boast while you roast them about your objective.

3) Mirroring their body language. It makes them feel comfortable to see that your body language is non threatening by showing concern, if they're concerned, excitement if they're excited, etc.

4) Forget yourself, focus on them.

5)  Inquisitive eye contact.

6) Use their name repeatedly. I tend to add it to the end of sentences, in conversation. It lets them know that you are paying attention, even if they've forgotten your name!

7) Appearance is quite an important factor. Looking well, clean and tidy and possible a bit symmetrical helps in making a great impression. Perception is everything!

8) Speak calmly. Speaking with a low key and harmonious variation in speech tones, keeps things interesting. Never speak in a monotone voice, your voice is a siren's song!

The good news is that you can usually create a good impression without total conformity or loss of individuality. It's true, that making a good first impression requires some degree of "fitting in." Express your individuality appropriately within context. It's worth giving every encounter your best shot especially since you only have 90 seconds or less! With a little thought and preparation, you can hone your intuitive style and make every first impression more than just good! I've used these tips for many encounters and it has helped me a lot, while I learned to form these tricks via my direct sales and marketing days, it's information that has helped me even beyond that. Universally appealing! Dear readers, I'd love to learn about what helps you make a great first impression in 90 seconds or less!
