Why I'm Loving Casual Wear for 2016

Illustrated by Jacqueline Davis Moranti

I love fashion, and my wardrobe is full of different flavors and tastes. I tend to lean toward neutral colors and lighter fashion options, but that doesn’t mean I don’t know how to stay on trend. Last August was a hot one, my usual wardrobe favorites fell to the floor as I struggled to stay comfortable. From maxi dresses to wide legged pants, it's all that the weather would allow for! What I was left with wearing gave me a newfound love for casual wear. I can’t wait to see what trends in 2016.

The humble maxi-skirt was a savior during the heat. It covered what I needed to feel happy while I’m out, and they're also so lightweight you can feel free of the fabric. Best of all, the designs from last summer were so vibrant and intricately designed, how could you not fall in love with it?! The upcoming year looks intent on being the year for the maxi-skirt. I can’t wait to get hold of the latest garments to style in my very own way! Let's not forget the younger sister of the maxi-skirt too, split skirts and A-lines in the same style too.

Sandals are looking to be much more strappy than they have been. There has been a trend for double strap wrist watches and bracelets that sandal makers all over have been mimicking. The fabrics are soft and comfortable, doubling back around the ankle in many colors. Of course, Tans and nudes are the color to go for although the ones frequented on the runways were pale mint green. Not quite my color but I loved the idea!

Flowery, bohemian tops are making way for the easy-wear tank top. They’re a great shape for most figures because they’re higher cut around the neckline, and wider strapped at the shoulder. Some of them are already available in rip curl and will look stunning on the beach next summer. Colors are definitely surf-inspired, with lots of blues.

Accessories, accessories, accessories! I love accessories for a casual look, there seems to be no limit to how much layering you can wear and there are so many great designs and styles to choose from. I absolutely adore the natural materials that are being used for casual accessories right now, like wood. It’s nice to get away from the plastics and metals that have been trending the last couple of years. Natural wood has a beautiful grain and is so versatile for beads.

If you’re not really a hat person, then get ready to change your mind for 2016! Big is back, and the choice of style and design is phenomenal! White hats for summer are starting to trend, instead of the usual straw colored wicker hat. Now toppers are fuller in texture and fabric, and they’re fuller at the brim too. There’s just enough flop to keep you looking girly and gorgeous.

I’m already getting quite excited about what is to come in fashion in 2016. The catwalks have been full of great ideas. There certainly seems to be more choice for the coming year. If you’re getting ready for a heatwave, try the new casual. Love the look in 2016! Dear readers, how will you dress your casual?
